S_1.jpeg16 Groups:  COAH Should be Replaced with an Effective System that Produces Homes Near Jobs and Transit

Coalition for Affordable Housing and the Environment · Corporation for Supportive Housing · Fair Share Housing Center · 8 Habitat for Humanity Chapters · Housing and Community Development Network of NJ · Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry · NAACP New Jersey State Conference · New Jersey Regional Coalition · Supportive Housing Association

June 15, 2010 - Trenton, New Jersey- A wide range of civil rights, environmental, housing, religious, and supportive housing and special needs groups called on the Legislature to replace COAH with a strategy that will actually produce more homes near jobs and transit, instead of adopting the deeply flawed S.1. Read the entire document.  See a detailed comparison chart between S.1 and our proposal and read a letter from the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey on affordable housing.

Network releases statement on passage of S.1 by NJ Senate

On Thursday, June 10, 2010, the Senate voted to pass the S.1 bill with a margin of 28-3-6. The Network has released a statement   in response to this legislation. In addition, FairShare Housing has released a summary of the effects of S.1.

Christie housing plan would build no houses

Governor Chris Christie, on May 13, unveiled his proposal to replace New Jersey's current system for creating a supply of homes that people of lower income can afford with a system that would set the production bar much lower. Housing advocates, including the Network, found the proposal, which is available in outline form hereto fall well short of addressing this critical issue. Indeed, an analysis by the Network finds that the proposal would cause almost no new housing to be built. A critique by Network ally, Fair Share Housing Center, arrives at a similar conclusion. Click here to access a set of postcards that will allow your organization, friends and allies to voice opposition to the current attack on building homes people can afford. See also a Policy Bulletin and a newspaper article on the Governor's proposal.

"No to S.1": State Senator Raymond Lesniak's ill-considered proposal to dismantle the state's housing delivery system is expected to be voted on by the full Senate in late April or May. The Network and its allies continue to vigorously oppose the measure. Visit our "No to S.1" page to learn about the bill, what we are doing to stop it and how you can help.

S.1 takes New Jersey in the wrong direction!

New Jersey needs more housing choices that people can afford.  The state’s policies should encourage environmentally appropriate development in communities with access to mass transit, near places of employment.  Creating homes for people of all incomes and providing safe, walkable, retail friendly communities will benefit all New Jerseyans.  Building and preserving the homes people need will result in job growth and economic investment and help restore our state’s prosperity. Unfortunately, the major legislative initiative in the NJ Senate (S.1) does not meet these objectives. S.1 is an ill-considered measure that would gut the current system and leave nothing in its place to ensure that much-needed housing will be built. It will take New jersey in the wrong direction. Network members and allies will continue to work to block passage of the bill, which may be voted on by the full Senate this May.

New Jersey has an opportunity to move forward, by developing a comprehensive plan for the state's future that would benefit all residents.  Yet, S.1 would take us backwards, to the era before Mount Laurel.  Read the outline of the Network's  alternative plan to create the homes New Jersey’s residents and economy need.
