Network Statement on U.S. Supreme Court's Ruling to Lift Federal Eviction Moratorium

8/27/2021

Following a ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the Biden administration’s order extending the federal eviction moratorium, Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey (the Network) Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sharon Barker issued the following statement:

“Throughout the pandemic, eviction moratoriums have kept people safe and stably housed, preventing mass homelessness during a public health crisis. Yesterday’s ruling puts millions of Americans at risk as the delta variant overwhelms our health systems. Even more frustrating is that state and local governments are working to distribute emergency rental assistance but need more time to get these funds into the hands of those who need it most.

"Fortunately, NJ’s eviction moratorium remains in place for our most vulnerable residents through the end of the year. Our state has had some of the strongest protections that have superseded those of the federal government. NJ has established a program for households in need of assistance and we are a leader in the nation getting that aid out as quickly and fairly as possible. Resources are available for our residents and we strongly urge NJ renters in need of assistance to visit housinghelpnj.org to learn more."
