Housing and Community Development Advocates Applaud Announcement of New Homeowner Pandemic Relief Program

1/24/2022

The Murphy-Oliver Administration today announced the launch of the Emergency Rescue Mortgage Assistance Program (ERMA) to aid eligible homeowners negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing and Community Development Network of NJ President and Chief Executive Officer Staci Berger applauded the news and issued the following statement:

“We are thrilled to hear that help is on the way for lower income homeowners worried about losing their homes because of the pandemic. We know that residents who have been hardest hit by the virus are also at risk for foreclosure and housing instability. The Emergency Rescue Mortgage Assistance Program is going to help keep these vulnerable families safe and stably housed while preventing economic devastation in communities most impacted by COVID.

“As the state’s largest, funded HUD-certified housing counseling intermediary, serving New Jersey, we are ready to help residents obtain the funding to help make mortgage payments and access the tools to negotiate with their lenders for relief. It is especially important to provide these resources to Black and Brown homeowners, for whom systemic and institutional racism is a significant barrier to homeownership and generational wealth.

“Just before the pandemic, our state was turning the page away from the foreclosure crisis, which started under the Great Recession and was exacerbated by Superstorm Sandy. The coronavirus could have derailed this progress, but the Murphy-Oliver Administration has worked hard to protect our residents, our communities and our economy. Housing insecurity is one of the biggest threats to public health and safety at any time, but never more so than in the last two years. Gov. Murphy, Lt. Governor Oliver, NJHMFA Director Melanie Walter and the staff at state agencies have worked tirelessly to help homeowners and renters stay safely and stably housed.
