Sandy Bill of Rights Addresses Transparency and Efficiency Concerns, says Network
Senate President proposes reforms of recovery process

1/14/2014

Legislation to reform the Sandy recovery process was proposed today by Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland). On the Sandy Bill of Rights, Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey President and CEO Staci Berger issued the following statement:

"The road to recovery has not been smooth for New Jersey residents and small businesses affected by Superstorm Sandy. We're delighted Senator Sweeney has taken the lead and sponsored legislation that addresses the needs of those struggling to rebuild.

"The points laid out in the Sandy Bill of Rights will improve the transparency and efficiency of the process that has kept people from returning home for too long. The commonsense solutions presented in President Sweeney's bill not only streamline the grant application process but also establishes clear guidelines for the state to respond. Sandy survivors will have less red tape and more rights as a result of this proposal.

"We have heard from so many people who have lost everything. They need our government to help, not keep them stuck in an endless cycle of paperwork and follow-up phone calls. This proposal deserves swift action and immediate support from legislators on both sides of the aisle, and the governor’s signature"
