End the Bureaucratic Nightmare and Get People Back into their Homes, says the Network
Sweeney Bill of Rights tour visits Perth Amboy

2/19/2014

Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) visited the first stop in his 'Sandy Bill of Rights' tour today in Perth Amboy. At the event, Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey President and CEO Staci Berger issued the following statement:

"In communities like Perth Amboy, there are still so many people who have yet to receive the help they were promised in order to recover from Hurricane Sandy. We appreciate Senator Sweeney personally visiting these hard hit areas and hearing directly from those who have been let down by the recovery so far.

"Too many people who lost their home or business due to Sandy were denied help, wait-listed, or told not to apply at all. Many were treated poorly and made to feel, in their words, 'like a criminal,' or like they didn't deserve assistance. The Senator's 'Bill of Rights' legislation is the reprieve Sandy survivors have been seeking so they will not continue to be victimized by the recovery process.

"We can do so much more to help ensure that people get the information and assistance they need and are entitled to receive. The State has created a bureaucratic nightmare that has left Sandy survivors to fend for themselves. Our elected officials should support this legislation so we can end this bureaucratic nightmare and get people back into their homes."

The Housing and Community Development Network supports New Jersey’s community development sector, collaborating with more than 250 members including community development corporations and other organizations to create affordable homes, expand economic opportunities, and build strong communities.
