Network Urges Gov. Christie to Stop Stalling, Build Homes
Governor's inaction holds NJ's economy, residents back

3/13/2015

Today, Governor Christie will host a town hall meeting in the same town that inspired New Jersey's tradition of ensuring opportunities for affordable home creation. Before the event, Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey President and CEO Staci Berger issued the following statement:

"Governor Christie has fought tooth and nail to have the Mount Laurel decisions overturned and COAH, the state housing agency, gutted. We know he has delayed and denied opportunities for New Jersey residents to have homes they can afford. We don't know what his solutions are for New Jersey's troubled housing market, though.  He has not offered any answers, except to do nothing.

"The unresolved housing crisis is stifling our economy and hurting our state's residents. So many of our hardworking families, seniors, and people with special needs have to choose between paying the rent or mortgage, the power bill, or groceries. The lack of affordable, quality homes is an issue that requires action.

"New Jersey residents should have access to a safe, decent home they can afford in communities throughout the state. What are Governor Christie's solutions for college graduates who want to leave the nest, retired couples that want to stay close to their grandchildren, single parents who wants to keep their children in good school districts, adults with special needs who desire independent living, or the family whose home was destroyed by Sandy and can't find a rental in their home community? The people of New Jersey deserve better."

The Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey is the statewide association of more than 250 affordable housing and community development corporations, individuals and other organizations that support the creation of housing and economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Jerseyans.
