Statement from NJ Housing Association on Trump HUD Pick

12/6/2016

On the heels of the announcement of Dr. Ben Carson as President-Elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Network President and Chief Executive Officer Staci Berger issued the following statement:

“Dr. Carson’s nomination is surprising and concerning. He has publicly criticized the Fair Housing Act which protects individuals from housing discrimination. New Jersey is one of the most diverse and yet, still segregated, states in the nation. We need HUD’s policies and programs to support housing choices and opportunity for mobility, as well as reinvestment in all of our communities. Whether they live in our vibrant urban centers, suburban communities or rural areas, all New Jerseyans deserve access to affordable homes. Dr. Carson and others in the next Administration must ensure that all New Jerseyans and all Americans continue to have a path home.

“We are grateful to have professional civil servants that will continue to serve at HUD who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. It’s our hope that we can protect opportunities for all Americans under the new leadership with their help. We will work tirelessly with our national partners and elected officials to defend the programs and policies that underpin our social safety net, and look to our state’s leaders to advance the kind of housing system and funding that makes New Jersey a place we can all afford to call home.”
