Funding Freeze Unconstitutional and Detrimental to Our Most Vulnerable Families, says NJ Housing Advocates

1/28/2025

Later today, the Trump Administration will implement a pause on federal grants and loans while it conducts an ideological review of federal spending. The freeze will affect trillions of dollars already appropriated for initiatives such as education programs, disaster aid, homelessness prevention, food banks and so much more. On the funding freeze, Housing and Community Development Network of NJ President and CEO Staci Berger issued the following statement:

“Tax dollars are invested to support our communities and provide people with the resources they need to live a life of dignity. A halt to funding that has already been committed is irresponsible, unconstitutional, and incredibly mean-spirited. NJ families count on these programs to survive. Congress approved these funds and nonprofits like many of our members are depending on them to provide critical services to NJ residents like housing, childcare, and food assistance.

“Any type of funding freeze, no matter how temporary, threatens our communities, our infrastructure, and our economy and will only further the racial and social inequities that exist in our country. We urge our elected officials at all levels of government to condemn this action and take immediate steps to protect our most vulnerable residents.”
