Housing and Community Development Network Awarded Over $88K for Housing Counseling Efforts

6/22/2023

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced that it has awarded the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey (the Network) $88,566 in additional funding to support the housing counseling services of eight nonprofit sub-grantee organizations. The funds will help these organizations provide critically needed counseling to families and individuals to meet their housing needs and to prevent future foreclosures. On the award, Network Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sharon Barker issued the following statement:

“New Jersey’s shortage of affordable and available homes is forcing more households to seek assistance and housing counselors are on the frontline offering guidance. The HUD-certified housing counselors we work with are assisting struggling renters by providing valuable financial education and referral to local services; preparing and guiding first time homebuyers; assisting homeowners to avoid foreclosure; and helping Black and Brown households overcome barriers in an effort to close the racial wealth gap and achieve homeownership. We thank HUD for this investment which will help our dedicated and highly trained counselors to reach more NJ residents and provide them with critically needed services.

As a funded, certified housing counseling intermediary, the Network provides pass-through housing counseling program funding to our network of qualified sub-grantee organizations which deliver housing counseling services throughout New Jersey. In this capacity, the Network provides administrative oversight around providing excellence of services, technical assistance, compliance, reporting, and training. In addition to the sub-grantees supported through the intermediary, the Network partners with and provides training available to more than 35 community based non-profit organizations that offer housing counseling services in their communities.”
